Engagement Sessions 101
People planning weddings sometimes ask about Engagement Sessions, what they are and why they exist.
Engagement sessions are about more than just getting photos before the wedding or an add-on in a photo package (I offer them as part of my pricing). They’re a chance for us—photographer and couple—to get a sense of each other before wedding day. Weddings are long, fast-moving, emotional, and it helps to have some time beforehand making images to build comfort and trust. Below I break down the 5 W’s and the How about Engagement Sessions:
Who: Any couple getting married who wants practice in front of the camera and a chance to spend some time with their photographer. Most people’s last experience in front of a camera was high school portraits or a headshot for work. I strongly encourage the Engagement Session and roll them into my wedding photo pricing.
What: A photo session that usually lasts about an hour, where we take portraits that reflect your relationship. These photos often get used for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or simply to have something personal to keep outside of the wedding itself.
When: Ideally, a few months before the wedding. That timing keeps the pictures current, and it gives us both time to adjust or plan if we discover anything useful during the session. I’ve had couple request them a year-out and also a couple of months away from the wedding date.
Where: Somewhere that means something to you. It could be the park where you walk your dog, the coffee shop where you first met, or a trail you like to hike together. If the location reflects you as a couple, the photos will carry more weight and feel more honest.
Why: Beyond the photos themselves, the session gives us a chance to work together before the wedding day. You’ll get a feel for how I shoot, and I’ll get a sense of how you interact with each other. By the time the wedding comes, you won’t be thinking about the camera as much, and I’ll know better how to capture you naturally.
How: We’ll set a time, pick a place, and keep things relaxed. You don’t need to over-plan or stress about it. The point isn’t to perform—it’s to spend a little time together and walk away with some photographs that reflect who you are.
